La Gaeta Olive Oil emerged in 2006 after a restructuring to convert the former vineyards and hazelnut trees into olive groves. Their estate – located within the municipality of Vilalba dels Arcs, in the heart of Terra Alta – has 15 hectares of olive trees of the Empeltre variety, planted both with olive trees more than 300 years old and young trees from 10 to 15 years old.
In 2006, they started to market La Gaeta oils from the first growing season, after obtaining the Extra Virgin certificate from the Tasting Panel of Catalonia. La Gaeta oil has a limited production of 3000 litres per year. In 2010 it received the AWARD for the BEST Empeltre Oil of the DO Terra Alta.
On the LA GAETA estate, the olives are harvested in the first fortnight of November, which is when they begin to take on their colour. Only olives on the trees are harvested. The olives are then taken to the mill in small crates and are pressed within 24 hours
in its own mill. The oil is extracted at a temperature between 25°C and 27°C. It is then filtered and allowed to rest in stainless steel tanks. This oil is only bottled when orders are placed, to ensure that it will always have the very best organoleptic qualities.
